FILM DESCRIPTION: Although Frances Hodgson Burnett did not feel the need to write a sequel to her classic fantasy novel The Secret Garden, this did not prevent producer Norman Rosemont from commissioning just such a sequel. Set in 1946, Back to the Secret Garden finds Mary Lennox, the youthful heroine of the original novel, all grown up and far removed from her beloved enchanted garden in Yorkshire's Mistlewaith Manor. Now living in New York, Mary comes in contact with Lizzie (Camilla Belle), a feisty Brooklyn-born orphan. It is Lizzie who tries to save the day by heading off to England and endeavoring to save Mary's secret garden, which has been literally dying in its caregiver's absence. Joan Plowright, George Baker, Cherie Lunghi, and Leigh Lawson co-star in this German-British co-production, which was originally intended for theatrical release. The American premiere of Back to the Secret Garden appeared on the Showtime Cable Network on September 2, 2001 -- nearly two years after the film's completion. The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett (Book Summary) - Minute Book Report

02:49
This is a quick book summary of The Secret Garden by Frances Burnett. This channel discusses and reviews books, novels, and short stories through drawing...poorly. Transcript: This is a story about a spoiled English girl named Mary who grows up in India with her mother and father. Her parents ignore her, so her Ayah, or nanny, mostly takes care of her. However, cholera begins infecting the people of the house, killing nearly everyone except Mary. Mary is then taken to live with her uncle, Archibald Craven, a lonely man who lives in a large mansion near a moor and travels often. Mary is instructed to stay in her room by the headmistress, Mrs. Medlock. Mary meets Martha, a servant girl with a thick Yorkshire accent. Mary expects that Martha will do everything for her, but Martha tells her that she has to learn to do things by herself. Mary is bored of the mansion since there is no one around. She explores the surrounding gardens and discovers a secret garden with no entrance. She learns that her uncle used to go there often with his wife, but since her death many years ago, he’s locked it up, buried the key, and doesn’t allow anyone to talk about it. Mary befriends a red robin, who leads her to a buried key. Mary and Martha become friends as they learn more about each other. Martha even buys Mary a jump rope as a gift. As Mary is skipping rope, the robin leads her to the hidden door to the secret garden and Mary uses the key to enter the garden. Mary discovers that the garden is wild and unkept, but there are still signs of life. She asks a groundskeeper, Ben Weatherstaff, about tools and gardening practices so she can work in the garden in secret. Mary buys gardening tools through Dickon, Martha’s brother, who loves animals and knows a lot about nature and the moor. Dickon and Mary talk and Mary grows to admire Dickon for his closeness to nature and free spirit. Mary opens up about the secret garden to Dickon and soon they both start working the ground together. One night, Mary hears some crying and she investigates the source. She discovers a young boy named Colin, Mr. Craven’s son and her cousin. Colin is afraid that he’s growing a hump on his back and that he’ll die. And because he’s believed this lie his entire life, he is afraid to go outside and talk to people. Mary and Colin get along and Colin enjoys her company. They talk often, however, Colin gets jealous of Mary spending time with Dickon and they have a fight. Mary leaves upset and later yells at Colin, which gets him to stop feeling sorry for himself. Mary and Dickon plan on taking Colin to the secret garden and Colin grows excited. Colin is wheeled out into the garden and is amazed by the plants and open air. However, Ben sees the children in the garden and yells at them. Colin, being the head of the house, tells Ben that they must not be disturbed in the garden and that Ben must now keep it a secret. Over time, Colin goes to the garden with Mary and Dickon, and he gets stronger and more healthy. He practices walking out of his wheelchair and is excited to show his father when he returns. In the end, Mr. Craven returns home and sees Colin running and healthy. I adore this very touching show and loved playing my character Ben Weatherstaff, the grumpy old groundskeeper with a secret of his own. This is the song "It's A Maze" that is sung with the house staff Martha & Dickon, and young Mary Lennox. The talented girl playing Mary, Natalee, and I had a blast with our scene. Another nice movie : Samantha An American Girl 2004 https://youtu.be/lVwDvuUpak0 ((((I don't own this video)))...haven't you found your home...I hope you will......The Secret Garden is a children's novel by Frances Hodgson Burnett first published as a book in 1911.......STORY : At the turn of the 20th century, Mary Lennox is a sickly and unloved 10-year-old girl, born in India to wealthy British parents who never wanted her. She is cared for by servants, who allow her to become a spoiled, aggressive and selfish child. After a cholera epidemic kills her parents and the servants, Mary is discovered alive but alone in the empty house. She briefly lives with an English clergyman and his family before she is sent to Yorkshire, in England, to live with Archibald Craven, an uncle whom she has never met, at his isolated house, Misselthwaite Manor. At first, Mary is as rude and sour as ever. She dislikes her new home, the people living in it, and most of all, the bleak moor on which it sits. However, a good-natured maid named Martha Sowerby tells Mary about the late Mrs Craven, who would spend hours in a privatewalled garden growing roses. Mrs Craven died after an accident in the garden, and the devastated Mr. Craven locked the garden and buried the key. Mary becomes interested in finding the secret garden herself, and her ill manners begin to soften as a result. Soon she comes to enjoy the company of Martha, the gardener Ben Weatherstaff, and a friendlyrobin redbreast. Her health and attitude improve, and she grows stronger as she explores the moor and plays with a skipping rope that Mrs Sowerby buys for her. Mary wonders about both the secret garden and the mysterious cries that echo through the house at night. As Mary explores the gardens, her robin draws her attention to an area of disturbed soil. Here Mary finds the key to the locked garden and eventually the door to the garden itself. She asks Martha for garden tools, which Martha sends with Dickon, her 12-year-old brother. Mary and Dickon take a liking to each other, as Dickon has a kind way with animals and a good nature. Eager to absorb his gardening knowledge, Mary tells him about the secret garden. One night, Mary hears the cries once more and decides to follow them through the house. She finds a boy named Colin living in a hidden bedroom. She soon discovers that they are cousins, Colin being the son of Mr and Mrs Craven, and that he suffers from an unspecified spinal problem. Mary visits him every day that week, distracting him from his troubles with stories of the moor, Dickon and his animals, and the secret garden. Mary finally confides that she has access to the secret garden, and Colin asks to see it. Colin is put into his wheelchair and brought outside into the secret garden. It is the first time he has been outdoors for years. While in the garden, the children are surprised to see Ben Weatherstaff looking over the wall on a ladder. Startled and angry to find the children in the secret garden, he admits that he believed Colin to be a cripple. Colin stands up from his chair and finds that his legs are fine, though weak from long disuse. Colin soon spends every day in the garden, sometimes with Dickon as company. The children conspire to keep Colin's recovering health a secret, so as to surprise his father, who is travelling abroad. As Colin's health improves, his father sees a coinciding increase in spirits, culminating in a dream where his late wife calls to him from inside the garden. When he receives a letter from Mrs Sowerby, he takes the opportunity finally to return home. He walks the outer garden wall in his wife's memory, but hears voices inside, finds the door unlocked, and is shocked to see the garden in full bloom, and his son healthy. The servants watch, stunned, as Mr Craven and Colin walk back to the manor together....source : WIKIPEDIA https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Secret_Garden

The Secret Garden (version 4 dramatic reading) Frances Hodgson BURNETT (1849 - 1924) Frances Hodgson Burnett's classic children's novel is about orphaned Mary Lennox, who is sent to live with her uncle at Misslethwaite Manor in Yorkshire. Initially a sour, bad-tempered child, Mary begins to bloom under the influence of nature when she discovers a long-abandoned garden on the grounds of her uncle's estate.

Thank you to StageleftKaraoke for sharing this backing track. It's been one of my favorite musical selections for years. I was happy to find it! I almost choked in the middle because I didn't know where to breathe and I didn't want to lose momentum leading up to the bridge!!! Hahaha!! So I was struggling for a minute there! I may redo this later with more energy (there are people sleeping here in my home so I'm trying not to blast everyone out of their beds) and also put more Yorkshire into "Martha's" accent. I hope you like it!

It was true, too. She had a little thin face and a little thin body, thin light hair and a sour expression. Her hair was yellow, and her face was yellow because she had been born in India and had always been ill in one way or another. Her father had held a position under the English Government and had always been busy and ill himself, and her mother had been a great beauty who cared only to go to parties and amuse herself with gay people. She had not wanted a little girl at all, and when Mary was born she handed her over to the care of an Ayah, who was made to understand that if she wished to please the Mem Sahib she must keep the child out of sight as much as possible.." ...CONTINUED... She is best known for the three children's novels Little Lord Fauntleroy (published in 1885–1886), A Little Princess (1905), and The Secret Garden (1911). Frances Eliza Hodgson was born in Cheetham, Manchester, England. After her father died in 1852, the family fell on straitened circumstances and in 1865 emigrated to the United States, settling in Jefferson City, Tennessee. There Frances began writing to help earn money for the family, publishing stories in magazines from the age of 19. In 1870, her mother died, and in 1872 Frances married Swan Burnett, who became a medical doctor. The Burnetts lived for two years in Paris, where their two sons were born, before returning to the United States to live in Washington, D.C. Burnett then began to write novels, the first of which (That Lass o' Lowrie's), was published to good reviews. Little Lord Fauntleroy was published in 1886 and made her a popular writer of children's fiction, although her romantic adult novels written in the 1890s were also popular. She wrote and helped to produce stage versions of Little Lord Fauntleroy and A Little Princess. Burnett enjoyed socializing and lived a lavish lifestyle. Beginning in the 1880s, she began to travel to England frequently and in the 1890s bought a home there, where she wrote The Secret Garden. Her oldest son, Lionel, died of tuberculosis in 1890, which caused a relapse of the depression she had struggled with for much of her life. She divorced Swan Burnett in 1898, married Stephen Townsend in 1900, and divorced him in 1902. A few years later she settled in Nassau County, Long Island, where she died in 1924 and is buried in Roslyn Cemetery. In 1936 a memorial sculpture by Bessie Potter Vonnoh was erected in her honour in Central Park's Conservatory Garden. The statue depicts her two famous Secret Garden characters, Mary and Dickon. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Frances_Hodgson_Burnett Photo Image Credit: http://ia800209.us.archive.org/9/items/LibrivoxCdCoverArt8/Secret_Garden_1105.jpg https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Frances_Burnett.jpg https://pixabay.com/en/fantasy-light-tunnel-design-magic-2022973/ Music Credit: "Relent" Kevin MacLeod (incompetech.com) Licensed under Creative Commons: By Attribution 3.0 License http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/3.0/ Tag: Frances Eliza Hodgson Burnett, The Secret Garden, British-American, novelist, playwright, children's novels, Little Lord Fauntleroy, A Little Princess, Mary Lennox, Dickon, Librivox, recording, Karen Savage, public, domain, classic, inspirational, spiritual, growth, awareness, enlightenment, audiobook, video
